We have all wondered, if not actually asked, how good is my website? Is it running at top potential? Am I getting the most out of it? Can I make it better?
Most of us have some form of stat programs giving us hits, unique visitors, referral ip’s and all that and this is helpful information but does it really answer the question as to how effective a site is? Those of you with e-commerce sites may think you can by the number of sales generated each month. Can you really tell how many you could have or how many you may be losing because of your site? Not really, all these statistics have a purpose but can not help you with the effectiveness of your site and how many people you nay be chasing away because of some small detail you have over looked.
So there are two options here. Spend a lot of money and have someone analyze your site for you. In all honesty though, would you follow their recommendation? You have a lot of time and effort in your site and if you would told to change or it, or even rebuild it, would you act? The second option is to analyze the site yourself and ask the set of questions below. You will need to answer these questions honestly though and when you are done, ask some friends to answer the same questions. This will help to see if your answers compare to theirs and maybe take out some of the bias you may have.
1. Does Your Website Have A Purpose? – Is it for entertainment, e-commerce, marketing, tutorial or what ever? Does your site clearly display that purpose?
2. Is Your Website Focused? - You have 10 seconds to make an impression on your visitor. Is your site clear, good information and/or have a clear direction on how to get to pertinent answers?
3. How Functional Is Your Website? – Do links works, no errors, contact information up to date and everything running smoothly with no errors?
4. Does Your Website’s Balance Clarity with Aesthetics? – Is it all flash and no content? More SEO tricks than ease of navigation? Are you trying to sell a product or service that is not even working well on your site?
5. Does your website honestly reflect your business personality? Are you marketing your business correctly? Are you enhancing your business personality with image building, branding and good marketing practices?
6. Is your website integrated into your overall marketing plan? – Does your website match what your company actually does? Your web site should be integrated into your overall marketing strategy.
7. Is content king on your website? Is it up to date, informative and helpful to your visitors? Will it answer the question they are looking for?
8. Is your website an experience? – A website should be interactive, getting you visitor involved in your site and helping find their own solution just enhances the
9. Does your website have a distinctive look? Is it sharp and professional, have good colors, functional and a distinct personality all its own. Does it match your business personality?
10. Do you list appropriate contact information on your website? – Visitors will feel more comfortable with having some sort of contact with your site. Make sure that all the contact information is current and in good working order.
Honestly answer these ten questions and then you will have your answer as to whether your site is truly as effective as it can be.
