What is a trackback URI?

When I first received a trackback comment, I declined; it looked like some seriously ugly spam to me! After a few months, my curiosity finally won the war, and I had to go and find out… what does a trackback do?

Turns out the answer wasn’t just interesting, but useful as well. Now I’m an authority n stuff, so when my friends ask, which seems to happen pretty often, I’ll have this post to refer them to… and maybe… they’ll leave me a trackback ;)

Let’s say I’m reading a really interesting post on a blog, I want to share it with my readers, or I like the info but want more. In which case I want the original Bloggers attention.

A track back says … Hey you, Blog owner… I mentioned your site over HERE… and sends that blog owner a link to YOUR blog.

Now the other blogger, he may decide to visit, read what you had to say… and then further expand upon his original post… and linking back to my site, via a trackback.

So in short, a trackback is a link that lets the original blogger know that you linked to them.

Leaving a Track-Back

Some blogs make leaving a trackback pretty easy, just click the word trackback, and you are given the trackback URL, when you mention Blog A in your post, link back using the trackback URI and the owner of Blog A will be alerted.

Other blogs don’t make it quite as easy to find, and you often have to click comment, and then click trackback, again simply copying that URL into a post on your own blog.

On a side note, most bloggers that know what trackbacks are will approve the comment left by the trackback on their blog, so long as the post it leads to is worth reading, as it’s a compliment to the original blog, so they make for groovy backlinks, and allow you to do neat stuff like easily credit the author.

If you’d like to give it a try, go ahead and leave a Trackback on your blog about this post, you never know, time permitting, we might just stop by and say hello ;)
